I think it's important when discussing the medical advancement of Cuba, to recognize that a large portion of that advenment was made after the collapse of the USSR due to shortage in supplies, so people turned to the indigenous Cubans for medical assistance and their knowledge of medicine (which was ignored by colonizers up until this point) was critical in the survival of Cuba during the special period and helped modern Cuban medicine through knowledge provided by traditional Cuban medicine.
