doctor who 1x03: boom
i mean. wouldn't be the first time when the Doctor nearly dying when they weren't supposed to was directly followed by snow being frozen in mid-air
something something, if i had a nickel
doctor who 1x03: boom
@estroBiologist curious what your thoughts are on ruby! i didnt get any indication of her being doctor related?
that said i fully agree on the acting shit, and the writign and PREMISE of the episode were so delicious.
i also think, like...
im really glad that we're at a point culturally where anticapitalism is so normalized that something with a disney tag can have the kinds of messages this episode did.
doctor who 1x03: boom
@gutters0451 the anti-capitalist stuff is always kind of twofold for me because like. anti-capitalism packaged up and sold by capitalists obviously has been a thing for forever, capitalism has a unique and relentless ability to subsume critique back into itself, and i don't think it says terribly much that Disney would approve this. the Season 10 episode Oxygen did this exact thing back in 2017.
now, RUBY,
doctor who 1x03: boom
@estroBiologist obviously co-option is a consideration, and im not saying this is a revolutionary screed or whatever, but i do think its a good sign overall. continue tho
doctor who 1x03: boom
@gutters0451 i mean tbh i wouldn't say it's a consideration so much as it's just what happens. it's All anticapitalism under capitalism. it's routine and pervasive and there's no escaping it. it does rule but i'd be careful about ascribing much meaning to it. anyway yeah funny scifi show
doctor who 1x03: boom
@estroBiologist im not ascribing meaning regarding "ohhh these writers are revolutionary" i just mean like
im glad kids today are growing up with a show that says capitalism is murder, is all.
doctor who 1x03: boom
@gutters0451 the link is tenuous at this point, but the idea came from linking together stuff from a lot of the more recent series that idk if you've seen?
- the timeless child
- specifically, the timeless child being chameleon arch'd and living as a human
- ruby's age being fucking 3082 years. that's time lord level lifespan and OH MY *GOD* i just realized he commented on her lifespan at the end of the episode
doctor who 1x03: boom
@gutters0451 - i also just realized "calendar age" could refer to the calendar of the world they're on, in which case that number is entirely meaningless LOL. i'm guessing they wouldn't have put it in if it wasn't meant to be taken at face value though
- there was other stuff but i forgort. mostly just vibes. the repeated parallels being draw between the doctor and ruby as orphans adds to it i think
doctor who 1x03: boom
@estroBiologist id say they probably put "calendar age" in because originally it was "age" and someone said "hang on shes HOW OLD??" and they put in Calendar to like, clarify AGAINST your theory, rather than for it to be read into
but then again i am NOT caught up on modern who, only started 11s second season last week, so. im hardly the most accurate judge of what is and isnt relevant i guess. also aint touched classic
doctor who 1x03: boom
@estroBiologist i think she's definitely related to SOMETHING spooky, though, but something Fictional. my money is on one of the "gods". it shorted out when trying to determine her next of kin so theres clearly Something up there
doctor who 1x03: boom
@estroBiologist that was Calendar Age, not biological. it was outing the pair of them as time travellers, not saying she's actually 3082 years old.
and his comment on her lifespan was, i figured, because he was anxious about almost losing her and was thinking about her imminent mortality
doctor who 1x03: boom
@gutters0451 ooh that's a fair point about the time travelers thing. i hadn't considered "calendar age" vs "biological age" like that but it does make sense. it's still niggling at me though. there's SOMETHING there. idk

(yes, these gifs DID take an inordinate amount of time to record, cut and compress in order to fit nicely on fedi, thank you for noticing)
