the biggest thing that I think was missing from my experiences playing in rock groups in college was any time for us to just listen to the original recordings of the songs we were rehearsing, and just talk about what we were hearing, analyze them a little bit (not from a really technical standpoint, just enough to actually understand what we were playing), and just get a better sense of what everyone was playing and how it all fit together.
it's hard to explain to people that software is a fundamentally communal activity because they're like "ohh you're a dev! you must be so smart!" and like. it literally does not matter how smart i am. none of this works at all unless we can collaborate across time and space.
Holy moly. This is gonna be a time sink of massive dimensions. Much of the Boston Public Library's vinyl collection digitized on archive.org
Lots of stuff you know and lots more you don't.
i kinda just forgot i was a classically trained painter for a few years and ive just been rediscovering my love for random objects
like heres some lamps i did <1hour today look at them theyre so fun
my lighting practice for today was homestuck fanart i promise painting a bunch of objects can be fun
ok it was just regular floating point bullshit. just slapping a ROUND(etc.) on there fixed my problem.
fediverse : email :: ?? : gmail
Oh, fediverse is like email? So we'll struggle to get something setup, use a variety of clients, then get inundated by spam with hodge-podge solutions. Okay.
Then a huge company will come along with an ad-supported instance that solves all the spam problems and everyone will need to federate with them to reach their users.
Then they'll start imposing requirements on all the other servers, or they'll defederate from your small-time servers.
Seems all too plausible.
mindblowing new discovery in Conway's Game of Life: any buildable pattern in Life can be constructed from the collision of 15 gliders.
https://btm.qva.mybluehost.me/building-arbitrary-life-patterns-in-15-gliders/
the key principle: distance itself can be used to encode information. by determining the correct starting [x,y] coordinate for each glider, any future state of the Life universe can be created, with effectively unbounded complexity. 🤯
