while i'm talking about sumerian gender, one of the more fascinating aspects of the language is the existence of a separate sociolect, emesal (as opposed to regular sumerian, emeĝir) spoken, roughly, by aristocratic women, goddesses, sex workers, and effeminate men (i say 'roughly' because presumably the sumerians would have considered these to constitute a natural class)
