tl;dr The Boy and The Heron reminds me of Asteroid City in a lot of ways, in that many viewers completely missed the point AND in that it made me bawl in the car on my drive home
The Boy and the Heron [major spoilers] (new Miyazaki film)
the ending's as explicit as it can get -- no one on the planet could ever be Miyazaki's "successor," because the experiences, memories, feelings that shaped Miyazaki's work die with him. That's really it, one's life is one's own, no one else can experience it -- and when you one day die, the experiences, memories, and feelings that you cherish die with you.
So I can see why at 82 years old, Miyazaki asks us all -- "how do you live?"
The Boy and the Heron [major spoilers] (new Miyazaki film)
So much of the film is Miyazaki bidding farewell to both real people and his own characters. Hisako's a great example: she's the main character's late mother, she's Miyazaki's late mother, and she's also an amalgamation of so many of Miyazaki's past protagonists (Kiki, Chihiro, Nausicaa, etc). No wonder he gives her a giant hug before the movie ends, he's going to miss her so much once he's gone.
The Boy and the Heron [major spoilers] (new Miyazaki film)
this film is explicitly autobiographical, it's Miyazaki staring his own impending death in the eye while grieving the loss -- both of his fictional world and characters, but also his own memories, life, attachments to everyone he loves. And the film doesn't give you an easy, feel-good answer to it - Miyazaki's gonna die and everything he loves will die with him, and no one on earth can prevent that.
The Boy and the Heron [major spoilers] (new Miyazaki film)
this is gonna be one of his most polarizing films IMO, my friend I saw it with hated it due to its pacing/nonlinear and abstract storytelling. I think a lot of people are gonna watch this and expect a literal story about a boy going on a fantastical overworldly adventure to save his mother and step-mother, but it really isn't that at all
I’m building up a little digital cookbook of recipes I enjoy (print view -> save to PDF is a formatting godsend here), not so different from my grandparents copying decades of favourite recipes onto index cards and notepads lol
https://www.justonecookbook.com/easy-fried-rice/ great/easy fried rice recipe for those interested — makes me realize I should buy a proper nabe/wok for this though, stir frying in a standard frying pan can be tricky (rice goes flying instead of staying in the pan lol)

I rarely talk about work/education here, but I’m applying to PhD programs in Information/HCI related programs rn — my goal’s to research trans-centered computing/transfeminist design, trans-built technologies, etc. The reason I am pursuing a PhD is because I am a sicko who is addicted to work lol
