you know that quote that's often (erroneously) attributed to Shigeru Miyamoto -- "a late game is late until it releases, a rushed game is bad forever"?

well. turns out a trans woman game dev was the one who said it. huh.

@projesterone The real quote from Miyamoto was:
"A rushed game is forever bad. A delayed game is also forever bad. I hate video games and I hate making them"

@projesterone I love this quote.

"While tweeting about my latest attempts, a mutual pointed out to me that the reason I’ve been having trouble finding her is that she’s since transitioned and changed her name to Siobhan Beeman. This is such a not-uncommon occurrence in the gaming industry that, honestly, anytime I can’t find someone and there’s no obituary, I assume they’ve simply transitioned.'

@projesterone "This is such a not-uncommon occurrence in the gaming industry that, honestly, anytime I can’t find someone and there’s no obituary, I assume they’ve simply transitioned." lol, lmao

@rujasu @projesterone heck, I only found out about one of the best devs I knew from Interplay transitioning was from watching a documentary just the other year. A top dev and a really nice person all around.

@rujasu @projesterone yup. I had met her when my friend was doing sound and music for them, then more when I did the initial 3D work for Stonekeep.

@projesterone Striking how close Gaben's quote was to the original. It'd be incredible if Gaben had in fact done the same research as the article author...

@projesterone

I wonder how often this applies now that patches and updates can easily be released for games?

It's probably true most of the time, but there are a few redemption stories these days, like No Man's Sky.

Obviously you still shouldn't rush games. Much better to do it right the first time.

@grendel84 @projesterone I worry what'll happen when current consoles' update servers go down.

People are gonna have to pirate updates just to make games playable.

@projesterone I was just thinking about this quote the other day. Specifically in the context of it no longer being true, in this era when post launch updates are the norm.

Thanks for the detective work in the origin! Great stuff!

@luvcraft @projesterone As someone who has lived through botched forced initial releases that were "fixed" in updates but players didn't bother anymore 1 week later to even update (because we didn't have a million dollar ad machine maybe) I can say this is still very much true.

@projesterone

This is such a not-uncommon occurrence in the gaming industry that, honestly, anytime I can’t find someone and there’s no obituary, I assume they’ve simply transitioned.

lmfao

@projesterone That makes a lot of sense because it seemed like in the 90s it was the mantra of american pc studios but it was a very sudden switch to attributing it to Miyamoto. I *think* the idea it came from Miyamoto came from a book by British games journalised around about the millennium although I don't know which one. It's pretty hazy so I could've just misremembered.

@projesterone now if only more companies would take that advice… too many put out blatantly unfinished games and think they can be patched later.

@projesterone If you dig far enough you'll find that trans women have made basically everything in tech and then some famous cishet dude has had it attributed to him instead - Steve Ballmer

@projesterone
As a foreign speaker, I think I couldn't understand the first quote alone.

@projesterone im trying to find that one time i edited an image with this but with kanye and it says "a rushed album is bad forever" and theres like
"fuck this!
if you think no bathroom breaks blah blah is a worth punishment for lazy musicians smash that like button"
i cant find so pretend theres that
