based on what ive read and watched it looks like they walked back the really radical gameplay changes AOE3 made to make something more traditional fur the series, but they way sped the game up compared to 2 with much more resources in dark age, and removed certain core micro mechanics (no friendly fire, arrows and certain siege ballistics are heat-seeking, # of control group orders reduced)
