i think the unnamed windows 12 is going to be the point i just have to consider finally abandoning ms os's all together.
it's fortunate steam is really getting on making linux compatibly a thing, but im mainly concerned with music production. i do wonder if i might just have to maintain a perma-offline windows 10 w Ableton dual boot till some other solutions presents
i remember staying on 98se until xp sp1 came out (i rolled back more than one machine from ME and win 2k) , xp got decent by sp3 (still buggy af compared to now though) and i stuck with that till win 7 (yes, a year after EOL), skipping the atrocious vista (retrospectives claim it wasnt that bad, i briefly tried it and couldn't accept the performance hit for no benifit) i grudgingly moved to 10 before 7's eol and have just hated it since
ableton, i beg you, please, give me a snap/flat pack. please devs, give me non-vst plugins i can use
theres so many 3rd party utilities that are necessary to make windows usable, will Microsoft just keep breaking compatibility, will devs just stop developing/adapting
one of the funniest things i keep running into on GitHub is "i no longer maintain this software for windows as i used a mac/linux"
i certainly get where thats coming from
regedits to totally remove all window borders except the top bar (any attempt to remove it permanently breaks windows, so despite snap conrols and alt draf, i have a top bar with title+ control buttons (close, maximize, minimise) i just dont use, stealing pixels from me
i have to disable cortana, windows xbox crap etc etc etc after major updates
sometimes even reinstall my icon them
will 12 be worse? will it just resist modification
a taskbar thats fully hidden unless the win key is held
a 3rd part mixing board thats hotkey controlled
reg edits to set the colours microsoft opposes as main&accent colour
software thats no longer updated but *works* on w10 and doesnt talk to the internet
22 looks like even notepad will have neoclippy baked in
i don't want machines to replace artists, i want to be able to use "natural language" tondirect software to do what i want.... but i don't see that happening
do i want to (again) have to learn and document all the various hacks and mods for 12 ive done for 10?
windows 12:
i do not want text/image generators in my os, im on win 10 rn because my 10yr old (v futureproofed) machine, despite still driving a lot of new games on full spec and running Ableton / da vinci resolve easily (some creaking at times, to be fair) has an older generation processor
honestly im not sure i would have upgraded anyway, w11 certainly looks even more a step away from the minimalist clean desktop i use
not to mention, just prone to shitting itself and dying
despite my expertise i really dislike computers & currentnhardware in general because i know how much *better* they could be
i miss how mechanical and SOLID hardware used to feel, sure its good to have gotten away from screwing a vga cable into a monitor, but everything feels worryingly *flimsy*
i am a simple woman who wants to syncthing a collection of .cbr/z's to a folder and read them, this should not be hard
maybe i need to look at lineage os and see if it does anything better but i suspect it has the same android jank
for various reasons usb-c has become the defacto cable and despite all the bs fast charging or charge only cables and "usb gen2 v2 2nd edition third strike reloaded featuring shadow the hedgehog and dante from devil may cry" naming absurdity (when it so easily could be simple) at least as a cable & port it *works*
theres not a single way i xan think to install a microsd in a way that doesnt feel weird and wrong
this bullshit is no way to install anything in anything, its a fucking sled, its so utterly antique!
and i just can't recall sd cards (or compact flash, usb drives) having the same issues as microsd
give me a tablet case i can unscrew to install an m.2 drive because chances are once i install more storage I never want to take it out again, not a confusing standards sliver of plastic and metal that im terrified i could snap in half or jam into the tablet wrong if i sneeze
i bought a cheap-but-good tablet near exclusively for reading manga/comics w 128gb internal storage, capped it off with a 512gb sd card and today discovered that despite setting it as internal storage.... the android tablet just wasn't using the space, tried to change this and suddenly "your sd card is corrupted"
cue having to boot into my opensuse install to unfuck the now corrupted sd card and then back into windows to reformat to exfat (ik there are exfat utils for linux)
i wish we had a better option than microsd for expandable storage
apart from the plethora of fake ones being sold online, they are annoying fragile in a way that i find upsetting
from the way you insert them into a phone/tablet, to their flimsiness, to their sudden and unexpected willingness to corrupt for no reason, i hate them
