i remember learning about phrenology in school as an 'outdated science' like the problem with it was that it didnt work and not how fucking racist it is
@vriskommunism and when we did that part today the kids were immediately like hey that's fucked up and I was like yeah we're gonna learn more about just how fucked up it is tomorrow. By this I mean that I told them it was "a bunch of crap" and the kids were like "oh my god Ms. Rachel you're using vulgar language in the presence of women" because they keep saying that phrase cause it's funny and it was in our text that Phineas used vulgar language in the presence of women after his accident
@rachel that sounds exactly the same as when i was in school fucking hell
like even if the intent was to teach that we dont always understand things when we think we do (horrible example to use for it) it just sorta sails past anything about the consequences of a racist and ableist system. which is the only thing that would actually be important to teach!
@vriskommunism and that's exactly what is in this unit. It literally just has the kids compare the "whole brainers" vs "the localizers/phrenologists" and mentions in passing that phrenologists thought you could tell what someone was good at from the shape and bumps on their skull
