someone asked my thoughts on noise music:
despite the name, I'm an industrial musician. the two scenes had a lot of overlap at one point (the use of feedback and horrific distortions etc by throbbing gristle, for a single example) and there does appear to be a few point of re-convergence right now , it's not ever been my scene, so its not one i have very strong opinions on
there is a philosophical question underpinning noise music (and music in general). I hardly have to explain the idea of signal to noise ratio, but in (say) a contemporary rock song we wouldn't consider (saving some kind of production error) there to be any "noise" in a faithful digital replication of the work.
to me its the weed problem (not that kind), if you *choose* to plant something in your garden that other people call a weed its definitionally not one. (
one only need think of Giant Hogweed that was originally grown here as an ornamental plant but as its now growing wild in many places (and dangerous as well) its considered a stubborn weed
so ... noise music is noisy but its hard to call it noise unless you think its noise because if you enjoy it its signal even though its noise music
