windows 12:
i do not want text/image generators in my os, im on win 10 rn because my 10yr old (v futureproofed) machine, despite still driving a lot of new games on full spec and running Ableton / da vinci resolve easily (some creaking at times, to be fair) has an older generation processor
honestly im not sure i would have upgraded anyway, w11 certainly looks even more a step away from the minimalist clean desktop i use
22 looks like even notepad will have neoclippy baked in
i don't want machines to replace artists, i want to be able to use "natural language" tondirect software to do what i want.... but i don't see that happening
do i want to (again) have to learn and document all the various hacks and mods for 12 ive done for 10?
regedits to totally remove all window borders except the top bar (any attempt to remove it permanently breaks windows, so despite snap conrols and alt draf, i have a top bar with title+ control buttons (close, maximize, minimise) i just dont use, stealing pixels from me
i have to disable cortana, windows xbox crap etc etc etc after major updates
sometimes even reinstall my icon them
will 12 be worse? will it just resist modification
theres so many 3rd party utilities that are necessary to make windows usable, will Microsoft just keep breaking compatibility, will devs just stop developing/adapting
one of the funniest things i keep running into on GitHub is "i no longer maintain this software for windows as i used a mac/linux"
i certainly get where thats coming from
i remember staying on 98se until xp sp1 came out (i rolled back more than one machine from ME and win 2k) , xp got decent by sp3 (still buggy af compared to now though) and i stuck with that till win 7 (yes, a year after EOL), skipping the atrocious vista (retrospectives claim it wasnt that bad, i briefly tried it and couldn't accept the performance hit for no benifit) i grudgingly moved to 10 before 7's eol and have just hated it since
i think the unnamed windows 12 is going to be the point i just have to consider finally abandoning ms os's all together.
it's fortunate steam is really getting on making linux compatibly a thing, but im mainly concerned with music production. i do wonder if i might just have to maintain a perma-offline windows 10 w Ableton dual boot till some other solutions presents
i think about this chart, for a variety of reasons including people not knowing how to / being reluctant to do a full os update / not updating hardware / dedicated psychos like me having a pathological hatred of mercurial changes w OS's. will 12 be the sudden exception to the install/skip march of windows OS's
will 10 linger on in a zombie state
what happens when line doesnt go up?
tell me im wrong but ms chasing "ai" seems really absurd when they still (iirc) havent moved everything even in the latest win 11 to UWP/metro-style
in win 10, if using powertoys launcher (a good replacement for launchy, a thing that kde has has forever) i still get two "settings" apps, one being the old style control panel
seems bad(?) just not finishing moving everything to the the up-to-date style
(ignore the weird colours on the control panel, the dark theme im using has some quirks)
not to mention really bizzare things, the "programs and features" (from as far back as vista?) still loads in all installed applications a LOT faster than the new "Apps" thingy, and apps is just less informative overall as to publisher etc
programs and features even fits more than 2x the number of installed applications in a list onscreen than the "apps" ... app
sure, its "cleaner" but its functionality is just lesser than something designed over a decade ago
enough examples
@MollyNoise I wonder what those two spikes are. the last big one is probably explained by christmas presents, but I don't really see what other two times of the year a lot of people would get new devices or have to set up old ones en masse
@MollyNoise ...wait, is it the new school year and new semester dates? are those separate?
@SehrLesbisch yeah, it could be people getting it and becoming disenchanted, it could well be new computers tied to college years. this is *global* as opposed to US centric so you could check google trends pared down by country and see if it lines up!
@MollyNoise oh I'm german and don't know US year cut-offs. didn't even consider country differences, damn
@SehrLesbisch (im irish and dont like that americans presume they are the only ones on the internet either)
