oh no I just thought about Jade recapitulating the same abandonment dynamics that Grandpa Harley imposes on her (admittedly not totally through his own actions) and on Jude and Joey with Yiffy and I am suddenly in agony

Philip Larkin looking at these kids like, motherfuckers I warned you didn't I? didn't I say that this be the verse?

see my earlier post about "actions have causes but also have consequences" aksjsdkfahsdkjf

@dee it happened cause I saw something that referenced Rapunzel and I was like oh this will be art of Yiffy but no it was of JADE and I was like OH NO IT'S THE SAME

@Sophia_Zoe AUGH. OH GOD.....GIRLS BY THEMSELVES IN THEIR TOWERS :((( that makes me think of floral's jade focused comic too, where she visits june on prospit... the pain is unfathomable

@dee god ok yeah I've been meaning to finally read Liminal Space, people seem to love it so much?

@Sophia_Zoe it has some of the best characterization and explorations of the hs cast ive seen in recent fanworks, on top of floral's art just having such an expressive and fun quality to it! def super recommend

@dee yeah that was a really good comic :O

really having some Thoughts about the reclamation of Gustav Klimt's painting style in the context of a black character? that's VERY interesting stuff symbolically, even though I know it's not the point of this story at all sadkjfhdskafh I just can't turn off Art History Brain

@Sophia_Zoe Please elaborate that sounds really interesting!!

@dee like a big development in the european avant garde during the late 19th and early 20th century was the discovery of "primitive" art and its incorporation in western aesthetics as influences from an "uncivilized other"--you can see it everywhere from Gauguin to Picasso to yeah Klimt. so, imo specifically having Jade's fantasy of meeting John in that style, for two poc, is an interesting inversion and reclamation symbolically? idk how deep we can go with that but it's what came to mind haha

@Sophia_Zoe oh shit that IS really interesting....its not really a connecting thread that was brought up in any art classes ive had in the past? like most of the nastier aspects of Western Artistic Hegemony i guess

gauguin being a piece of shit/csa/colonialism cw

@dee askjdhdjfa oh my god that shit is so essential to what so many of the artists were doing though?? like Gauguin literally abandoned his family to go to Tahiti to get closer to idk primitive humanity, and took a 14 year old girl as his mistress and shit, just, truly awful shit. but uh yeah he was EXTREME but not alone in participating very eagerly in colonialism while also lionizing primitive society over bourgeois industrial european culture

gauguin being a piece of shit/csa/colonialism cw

@Sophia_Zoe god DAMN that is so horrid i had no idea this dude sucked so bad....... Ew! then again my college classes were more focused on design history rather than things like paintings/sculptures/etc, so we kind of brushed over these subjects but STILL ITS AN IMPORTANT THING TO HIGHLIGHT ABOUT AN ENTIRE ART MOVEMENT???

gauguin being a piece of shit/csa/colonialism cw

@Sophia_Zoe what probably happened is that it was mentioned but brushed off as "inspiration" and never actually delved on, if i had to take a guess from my fuzzy memory of years ago

@dee that makes sense yeah idk there's just a really complicated and not great history of the avant garde treating colonized subjects as raw inspirational material haha

but thats basically why I found the use here interesting, it feels like some kinda subversion imo

@Sophia_Zoe get out as early as you can, and don't play sburb yourself
