i'm thinkin about the system we currently use to label gender and sexuality and how long it might last? because like, categories like that have changed massively over time in wording and definition, and they will again. what we have now is good for some things but not others and im curious about how change happens like that
homophobia related to the split-attraction model, a little ableism
there's so much resistance to it, like, i have genuinely seen multiple people imply that anyone using the split attraction model is (insert various mental illnesses, slurs, and insults here). or that it is inherently damaging to anyone in contact with it. and... straight up not understand that that is homophobic.
homophobia related to the split-attraction model
nah, it's not for everyone by a long shot, but i'll never understand looking at a person who is critically thinking about and more deeply understanding their identity and saying "you're wrong actually, i know better". and this is a surprisingly controversial take to have???
homophobia related to the split-attraction model
like, im sorry but if you are telling queer people that they're just pretending/lying, that they're too young to think about their sexuality, that basic queer terminology & labels are inappropriate for children, or that they are literally mentally ill for being queer in the "wrong" way, You Are Being Homophobic!
i think that people online, especially in the places i (until recently) frequented on twitter, have convinced themselves that being a cop is a good thing. sit up straight and look pretty for the wells fargo pride float, kids, and never ever put a toe out of line, or we will beat you into submission.
i love being queer, and messy, and hard to put a label on. i've changed my entire identity multiple times. i've been a man, a woman, genderfluid, agender, and more. i've been bi, ace, aro, bi again, and a lesbian. i've used weird combinations of all of these that i've had to delete all evidence of, out of fear. i've gone by 5 or 6 names now. I want to keep doing so. I'm never gonna stop being messy and a happy existence in major queer spaces online is impossible because of that.
@callieroxy i read this thread earlier today and i haven't stopped thinking about it. it's super inspiring and you rock.
