@SophiaSurname @swampvendor thats what it had turned into by the time of TBBT sure but actually it was originally because when the live studio audience of earlier sitcoms got outmoded, actors and audiences both felt like things were Incomplete without crowd reactions and so it was less a crutch for things not being funny and more a cure for things feeling offputting without a crowd
