we were constantly told that israel was our birthright, that we were chosen, that we were special. the second i left that school, the entire ideology failed to hold water: the repetition broke, the mantras no longer repeated. one single contradiction toppled the house of cards.
every day, i was informed that israel was the promised land. we funded trips to israel for our 8th graders. we sung the israeli national anthem after the american one - the melody is still burned into my head, between half-memories of hateful teachings.
80% of my graduating class went on to join the IOF.
if you can fill a second grader with that much hatred, you need to be stopped. desperately.
i had a deeply zionist upbringing. i went to a jewish private school from preschool to 8th grade. i have very few childhood memories, because i have dissociated from them - i remember vague tinges of homophobia and sexism.
but one thing that sticks in my mind:
when i was in 2nd grade, i was asked to draw a picture of jerusalem. i drew a mosque, since it was the only building that i knew. i was told that it was a muslim building, not a jewish one.
i wrote "CONDEMNED" in big red letters on it.
even those without arrests are bloodied, bruised, and cut. indiana state police was dispatched onto a group of UNARMED PROTESTORS with TEAR GAS, BATONS, and GUNS, with snipers ready to take out student lives. faculty are unable to teach classes as a result of being arrested post-protest. the dean of the college of arts and sciences has gone as far to say that whitten's actions are deplorable.
the university is falling apart, and WHITTEN MUST FALL.
people are being evicted from their homes as a result of being banned from on-campus facilities after protesting, due to them living in dorms. these people have no other place to stay, and are unable to retrieve their belongings.
WHITTEN! MUST! FALL!
the faculty have ALREADY voted no confidence in indiana university president pamela whitten, but she stubbornly refuses to resign, citing that a disagreement means nothing in the free marketplace of ideas
they are banning arrested protesters from campus for one year without consulting university policy
WHITTEN MUST FALL!
i cannot emphasize enough how disproportionate this police response was. the policy was updated THE DAY BEFORE THE PROTEST and used to make arrests, under the guidance of "the ad hoc committee", which is undocumented. there was a sniper on the roof of the indiana memorial union. 33 people were arrested.
