its easy to fall into the idea that suffering makes art, i know thats superficial, i mean that i generallycannot relate to the uplifting, loving, optimistic and simplistic threads of mainstream art
or the comfortable apocalypse stories which are popular too

not that we cant be mediocrities, but I'm probably much more likely to pay attention to music and art by transsexuals and various of queers , the mentally ill, the dispossessed and marginalized

maybe I've just been lucky to consistently find gold

maybe some combination of factors means I'm more likely to get something Real and of substance than someone whos had a comparatively comfortable life

its still not a perfect film, its heartbreaking knowing how butchered it was in the cut, how they **dubbed over doug bradley** , cut out what looks like an incredible sex scene (etc)

some truly fantastic sets in the Below as well, kinda place id love to walk around - even just a digitisation of it in VR , they built a wonderful 3d set and it's a shame you don't get to see more of it

also, there are some very fuckable monsters in this film

and like, obv, having David Cronenberg as the super clean cut suit wearing killer psychiatrist is great - his mask is a goofy Scary Killer Mask but he "looks normal"

without his mask, probably no-one would give him shit just going to buy milk but he's a literal killer

the amount of people who would be able to regurgitate "don't judge a book by its cover" by rote but do that *every single day* is embarrassing

theres so much good shit in this film i did not appreciate before

the "grotesque" designs are alongside the more "cool monster" ones and say nothing about the personality of the character - like the very film is goading you to reflexively dislike the more monstrous midianites and then realise you're making a knee-jerk asshole judgement about someone entirely based upon their appearance

all these beautiful unique creatures trying to just live their life , but you don't get that forever

its interesting how the ending explicitly spells out

"No home lasts forever, its you and your community that has to survive"

and now, watching it again

yeah, a bunch of proud freaks go live together away from bs and then using the pretext of Crime the straights pour in with firearms and brimstone to burn their house down and wipe them out

the film could have been better but it has a place forever in my heart,

being a lil confused queer when i first saw it, id takeb a lot of shit (you know, physical violence etc) there was something appealing in a place you could escape to with a bunch of cool freaks

and its such a really fucking gay film

so very sick rn so watching movies - can't do much else, so ended up watching the 2hr cut of nightbreed, I'd read Cabal years ago and want to reread but i think, apart from hellraissr, Nightbreed was the 2nd thing I'd seen with his name attached

and thats that, also watched the 1 xfiles millenium episode, fine but kinda superfluous

well, it was certainly a show

a woman who is blind gets attacked in her own house ... so runs and flips off the breakers killing all the lights - very cool she had a plan

not the worst ending, I appreciate the arc which shows that OMG the secret society who are apocalyptic millenarian are maybe kinda EVIL???

I wish they'd leaned more into the occult and esoteric christian stuff more than the monster-of-the-week episodes, but of course this is just a symptom of the era in which it was made - you couldn't guarantee people would see every episode

I think i'll write a watch-skip guide at some point

the latter end of season 3 is not great, would have been nice if they had spent more time making Emma a more developed character

it is funny that the series was cancelled *before* the millennium
