trump's cult of personality is still pretty strong, and running now would alienate or at the very least split that cult, plus there's a real danger trump goes third party and sinks them both. after trump loses to biden again, though, desantis would be able to better position himself as trump's successor in leadership of the neofascist movement

biden may be unpopular but defeating an incumbent is still hard, and there's always time for his approval to get worse, especially given the likely economic collapse sometime in his second term. a narrow blue victory in 2024 would set the stage for a red sweep in 2028, as an inverse of 2004 and 2008
if i were desantis, i'd commit suicide immediately, but failing that, i'd continue shoring up my power until the right moment to strike
