there were a lot of heartbreaking scenes in this chapter -- dave's dysmorphia, terezi and june talking past each other, the striders vocalizing their resentment toward each other, jade still being unable to control her dog impulses, the swordfight, &c -- and i honestly don't know how to start analyzing them. it's a LOT but it didn't feel overbearing or cloying at all. it's just a rich, tightly woven tapestry of grief

there were a lot of moments in this chapter that made me giggle. mostly dark chuckles at puppet-june's cheery attitude toward the audience and her victims, but also more innocent laughter at the dog being like !!!!!!!!!!!

after 8.3.1 i made some comments on the similarities and differences between X and Badeline Celeste, and remarked how the big difference seemed to be that X genuinely wanted J dead. this chapter showed that its motivations were more nuanced and contradictory than that: badeline and x are each scared of both nonexistence and intimacy, but while badeline thinks she's helping madeline by weighing her down, x thinks it wants to kill j but can't follow through on it

x's commentary on how jade killed her own beloved daughter for keeping secrets from her was alarming for sure, and jade clearly can't be trusted at this point, but there's definitely more to the story and i really want to know how she would explain her own actions

first off i LOVE the art for this update. the puppeteering gif at the start really set the uncanny tone for this entire chapter, and the pieces at the end of each memory section were really evocative too -- wistful and tragic, viewed through a lens of june's love for these people

gonna go camping in yosemite with some friends from undergrad! see y'all on sunday

five more chapters remain, which i need to write in five months if i'm to meet my self-determined goal of finishing before year's end. i'm one of those weirdos who actually work better under deadlines so this is convenient actually

it took longer than i had expected, both in terms of days and of tonight's hours, but i just finished writing chapter 30 of through shadowed eyes. i am very much looking forward to showing it to everyone when everything is finally ready. i will say no more about it, lest i give away too much

i am going to abolish some signifiers of power to defeat injustice and inequality *power reasserts and signifies itself in new ways* shit!! fuck!!!

Did you just smile? Reactionary. Did you make a joke? Oh I see, you wish to laugh and have fun while the world is under the yoke of oppression. Did you just get dopamine? Clout farmer. Counterrevolutionary, the lot of you.
