today I mentioned I liked a book description I saw and my also very online nonbinary coworker who is friends with some published authors told me “too bad the author is a terrible racist person who started a harassment campaign against one of my author friends about a book the they wrote”… my coworker had a whole list of things this person had said and done and I think I just experienced what my irls must experience when they try to talk to me about the homestuck fandom

they were clearly upset that they had to explain this, not in a way where they were upset with me just like tired of the whole thing and tired of people not knowing what this person had done and I was just thinking to myself “I know this specific emotion you’re showing so exactly, and I’m so sorry my offhand comment triggered these feelings in you”

this also happens to be the one coworker who has asked me “did you girlfriend name herself after a Homestuck character” and then said they have avoided ever reading homestuck because of the fandom so we really are the same level of online
