@junebug it helped that a major theme in Homestuck later down the line became about "what makes someone themselves? what makes one version of a character less of themself than another?"

so naturally when slotting them into Jojo Part 3, a somewhat fate-centric monster of the week shonen, i was able to explore this theme a little bit while still mostly just playing around with said "dolls". not with much competency, but it's also fun to draw parallels between things never meant to be compared.

@junebug as someone who wrote a crossover comic that was largely encroaching on the territory of being an AU, a lot of the impetus to write it was absolutely just playing with dolls. specifically i saw the homestuck tarot deck and was like "wouldn't it be kinda funny if each character on these corresponded to the jojo stand named after it"

it ended up being a lot more like a puzzle or exercise as a result, rather than a standard AU. having some of it out of my hands made it less boring lol

there are a few different types of music used for Dragon Ball Z:

- the original bombastic lighthearted orchestra score (classic)
- the guitar and synth heavy dub score by bruce faulconer (very good at making tense atmospheres but gets pretty droning due to the tendency to never let music stop playing)
- the Ultra-Mega-Plagiarized scores for DBZ Kai and the Budokai games (sadly the best score because Kenji Yamamoto did know how to string his favorite bands together)

i feel like most of the time i read a post about a community or fandom having a problem with "toxic positivity" it is just absolutely not even true, and also a very silly thing to complain about. like damn you're telling me that people like a thing enough that they don't really want to dwell on internet trends towards endless criticism of said thing they like? sign me the fuck up

joke explanation

@steb (this is a joke on the fact that there's a chain of entertainment places with arcades, bowling, and laser tag called Main Event)

@agonist i think Shadow The Hedgehog did a really good job of making me uninterested in games that advertise choice-based morality systems and multiple endings due to its particular extreme of implementing the system, and how incomprehensible the story and themes are as a result

@goomy Altar of Naught (kh2 area)

Unformed Void (yugioh card)

Final Fantasy (final fantasy)

Zero's Domain (final fantasy)

i'm visible today. so is this pretty tree. hi there

@CarnassialGang @SophiaSurname while i'm on the subject of final fantasy 9's battle system i do want to shout out one nice thing and one baffling thing

i like the method of learning abilities being tied to having weapons and equipment on during fights since it's simple and engaging

i don't like the fact that Scan is significantly less useful in this game than in other games for some reason???

@CarnassialGang @SophiaSurname and yeah i figure if anything gives you too much grief it is best to just hit those instakill cheats

@CarnassialGang @SophiaSurname oh yeah black waltz 1 is complete bullshit. between the easily missable save point in the branching hallway right before, and the HP-gate based counterattacks from Sealion, AND the rigidity of the fight, AND the fact that it's an early game boss where you are getting 2v1'd, it's the weirdest difficulty spike in the game.

at least later you have more tools, the ability to grind more, and more signposted Save Points. and also a whole 4 person party

@CarnassialGang @SophiaSurname on the subject of Trance specifically it's weird because like. FF7 nailed Limit Breaks on its first go around (quick-ish to fill, can be saved for later) and then FF8 fucked them up (mostly dependent on low HP, easily manipulated, incredibly spammable, overall busted)

and then FF9 fucked them up in the opposite direction (super strong, very slow to fill, basically unusable in any practical sense unless you savescum to edge your party's Trance bars)

@CarnassialGang @SophiaSurname yeah as someone who really loves final fantasy 9 and grew up with the battle system's jank and problems, i'd also say that the ATB system is slow and annoying on normal speed, and that Trance is a cool but ultimately mostly frustrating idea

if you're playing on PC or Steam Deck you could always install the Moguri Mod. that has options for more true turn-based combat and the ability to save a filled Trance for later

@georgespolitzer @BestGirlGrace for a lot of the earliest yugioh cards they tried to localize them to sound cool and Unique if they were particularly simple, with less regard for accuracy. this is how we got "Cyclone" turned into "Mystical Space Typhoon"

sometimes if they used an English word in the Japanese version, they'd go and use a Japanese equivalent word (for example, "Cyclops" became "Hitotsu-me Giant")

for all i know Polymerization was just an attempt at spicing it up like the others
