@gutters0451 even without those being canon, the cutscenes added in Sonic Origins clearly show Sonic save Tails from a couple of bullies, leading Tails to start following Sonic. his motivation is further clarified in the OK KO! episode "Let's Meet Sonic!" when he says that he imagines Sonic as a "finish line" to keep him going forward

@gutters0451 I've always been of the opinion that the Sonic fan games Before the Sequel and After the Sequel are canon, which while not adding or changing *much*, shows that Tails follows Sonic because he saved his life (which is mostly canon-compliant, but the most common explanation the past decade has been that he took out a couple of bullies, but it's the same in spirit)
