also I caved and donated $5 to get the 10x10 square. because starting job and having long commute has made me listen to a lot more music. I kinda prefer the presentation of just the top 25 though. (plus mastodon's compression makes this illegible so I split it into 4. which sorta fucks with the order but whatever)
okay top 100 artists. I guess it's pretty normal, but it's funny seeing the first 10 or so being artists I listened to on repeat, and then the rest as a result of listening to one or two albums all the way through once. (with the exception of the Revue Starlight artists peppered in there, where I listened to like 2-3 songs over and over)
also I tried to use openscrobbler to get things when I listened on vinyl or cassette, but I forgot probably like half of the time
@prumm uwa uwa-oh
@prumm the cover art for it looks sooooo familiar so ignore me if im wrong but isnt that like album or band or smth the one that made community gardens?? i love that song so much which says a lot cause i rarely listen to music LOL
@harley yes! that's the first track on the album, actually. it's sorta separate from the main theme of the album but I like it a lot too
@prumm oh what website is this
@inarguableaxis it pulls the info from last.fm, so you have to set that to scrobble from wherever you listen to music to get this to work https://www.tapmusic.net
@prumm thank you!
@prumm hey that's me!!!!
@Aleums :D
@prumm ☝️ lesbian
@prumm both can be true
@prumm pointing at the abrahammer and pawgchamping
@turntechcatfish you did that!! :3 I really liked it, I was jamming out at my desk in a way I usually don't with mashup stuff
@prumm burn pygmalion =:D
@prumm have I ever told you you have great fucking taste
@Aleums thank you! I'm trying not to be genuinely surprised by the compliment, haha
@prumm it's good shit!! I'm not emotionally affected by mitski in that way but there's lots of cool stuff I recognize here and lots of things I've heard really good things about. also there's lots of different kinds of things which I always admire
@prumm were there any standouts that really impressed you this year, or things you thought you would like but were disappointing?
@Aleums disappointing: Jubilee by Japanese Breakfast (actually from 2021 but whatever.) I saw her live in 2018 and her previous albums are decent. this newest one was nominated for a grammy, but for some reason it just completely washes off of me to the point that I can only recall like one song. I think she gets frequently compared to Mitski, but notably I feel like her music has zero anger and relatively low intensity. they're just like... generic indie pop with a few catchy disco vibes
@prumm I feel the same for sure. my favourite of her songs have been the forgettable shoegazey ones, which I can get elsewhere
@Aleums my thoughts exactly! there are a lot of artists I get into whose early albums are shoegazey or otherwise have lo-fi noise rock-ish crunch, and then as they get bigger and more popular they sound more clean and poppy in a way that's less interesting to me. it's funny that Laurel Hell was my most listened album this year, because it really exemplifies this trend and I was a little disappointed. it did come out when I was feeling peak divorced though, so props to her for the timing
@Aleums standouts: Darklife by death's dynamic shroud, really interesting to see the different approaches they take for each album
-Piano Miniatures by Henning Schmiedt. did not expect this one to stick with me like it did. kinda ambient solo piano music. the artist describes it as "music as if viewed under a microscope: small film scores, mini sonatas, songs, tiny symphonies."
-Sen Morimoto (self-titled) is from 2020, but a remix album came out this year called Sean Motorolla. both really good
@prumm nice I will have to check these out
february (a day late)
