What is your favorite RPG in terms of narrative integration into the mechanics? What makes it satisfying to you?
@kate meet n fuck kingdom
@kate im not going to say disco elysium because its too obvious, so instead i'll go with the second most obvious option: new vegas! i don't think ive ever seen a game manage to write this level of meaningful, deep roleplay into so many buckwild and different directions, WHILE keeping such a clear narrative focus and theming through the whole thing. its really great how every skill has impact on how you Talk to people, not just "raw" gameplay, makes the whole thing feel so unique and personal
@kate and i think its a testament to just how Right they got it that to this day, sometimes i see people talk about their experiences with f:nv and go "wow i had NO idea this was In There" or "i had no fucking clue this alternate way to get from point a to point b existed" how crazy is that??? this game is a DECADE old
@dee I absolutely agree. Tbh I was asking this because I haven’t had as much fun and felt like I was playing as unique a character in any other game BESIDES new vegas, disco elysium and morrowind
@kate HONESTLY yeah! i havent tried morrowind but de was legit the first game i felt was on the same level as nv ever since i played it for the first time years ago. its just an insanely high bar lmao although a honorable mention goes to the pillars series, which i think is also extremely fucking good but doesn't Quite get there the way NV and DE do
@kate @dee I suggest finding a mod kit that will stop it from crashing, and also bei jt willing to console command god mode of you want. And yes, the story is as trashy as you could possibly imagine, and yes, the Chinatown segment is as racist as you can possibly imagine (among other sections)
but also, dang, it sure is a fuckin game
@kate serious answer? undertale because it goes really hard on making attacking a one-note grindfest suited for someone who's willing to kill everyone in the underground without mercy, while making every single encounter fun and inventive to act with, with the bullet patterns being full of personality
silly answer? final fantasy 8 because you're basically useless without a GF, just like squall is a useless dumb boy when rinoa is in a coma
@Sophia_Zoe @kate it holds up much better now that there's a fast foward button in the remaster
the junction system is lit as hell actually, the only tedious part is the draws and the menuing but there's a lot of freedom to break the game in half and i enjoy getting that chance
@kate majoras mask
AI could talk about why tomorrow but I think it’s a damn good game mostly
aside from that, a couple of really good TTRPGS
@kate honestly my favorite right now is based on this smaller ttrpg I've fallen in love with called Masks. It's a roleplay focussed rpg built around playing teenage superheros. So a lot of the major themes revolve around self discovery and growing up and the mechanics help reinforce this, especially within the base playbooks. I would highly recommend checking it out
@kate I'm trying really hard to come up with an answer that isn't Disco Elysium
